The news in March

IT’S BEEN BEAUTIFUL of late, and my child bride and her sister think winter is over. Maybe it is, maybe it’s not. March is a dicey month. I took the above photo from the upstairs terraza about six or eight years ago. That’s snow on yon mountains … in March.

It did not snow that week at the Hacienda, but it was darn frigid. When the dry, warm days of April arrive, then you can declare winter’s demise, not before.

Just for the heck of it, here’s another photo taken from the upstairs terraza. It was shot in June of last year. Those are the same mountains, of course. Sweet.

We’ve been a bit busy since we returned from Guanajuato, and we were busy before going to Guanajuato too. We’ve had a circular stairway installed from the balcony to the roof of our Downtown Casita. And now I’m waiting for our painter to finish work he’s doing for someone else in order to paint the Casita’s exterior.

And we have new cell phones, both of us, as of last week, and we bought the same model. Motorola G8 Plus, it’s called, and it’s a big improvement over her previous Samsung and my old Alcatel. There are people who still shun cell phones, which mystifies me. It’s like an electronic Swiss Army knife.

I use mine for reminders, checking my bank balance, using “virtual” credit cards so as not to get ripped off, and I’m a YouTube addict, so there’s that. Right on my Motorola. And there’s a calculator, a call blocker, the app of our car insurance which lets one immediately report an accident while the app pinpoints the car’s location.

How can you live without this stuff? Sometimes I even make calls on my phone. Messages are more common, mostly to my child bride. Speaking of calls, I recently canceled my Skype subscription after many years. It’s pricey, and I almost never used it, mostly to phone my investment company in the United States.

I discovered a better option for me. I have no interest in video calls, but I do need a U.S. number. There are several online phone services that work fine (PopTox, LetsBrik) but they don’t provide a U.S. phone number like Skype can.

It’s a sweet little app called Dingtone. You get a U.S. number, call waiting, message box, all the usual services, and it’s free to cheap. But no video calls. Meh.

I’m writing this at midday on Super Tuesday, so I don’t know the results yet. Bernie gonna win again? Are the Democrat candidates still screaming at one another? Will the Democrat National Committee steal the nomination once more from the crusty, old communist? Will the little-girl-groper Joe Biden be the nominee? Such fun!

As least Pocahontas is flaming out, silly broad. And Mayor Pete has bit the dust. I don’t think America is ready for a gay president with a First Man spouse. More to the point, I don’t think powerful, non-woke nations like China and Russia are ready for it, to put it mildly.

Too soon, way too soon.

Barbra Streisand says the United States could be “extinguished if Trump wins again. Extinguished! You just gotta howl at this stuff. Here we are, nearing the end of Trump’s first — but not last — four years, and the Republic still stands, hearty and healthy.

There are no troops goose-stepping in D.C., no midnight knocks at the door, no blacks hanging from trees. None of those Democrat predictions came true.

Quite the contrary. Things are far better than during the Obama administration. At least America doesn’t have a First Lady who is a cross-dresser.

And that’s enough news in March for now.

Hope it’s a lovely day wherever you are.

The truth about Roma

romaTHE MOVIE Roma is receiving lots of hoopla, as is its star, an indigenous schoolteacher from the Mexican state of Oaxaca and first-time actress with the name of Yalitza Aparizio.

The hoopla perhaps is greatest over Aparizio.

At the risk of being labeled a Philistine — I don’t care — I hold a less breathy opinion of the movie and its star who has been nominated for an Academy Award (Best Actress!), something I find silly.

The movie is quite good, but it’s no Casablanca or Sophie’s Choice. It’s not even The Wild Bunch, another movie set in Mexico.

I’ve seen Casablanca maybe three times, Sophie’s Choice twice, and The Wild Bunch about 14 or 15 times. It’s a cult classic. I’m a cultist.

Roma is quite good. It has subtleties I doubt many people outside of Mexico will notice and/or understand. I’ve seen it twice. I did the repeat after reading that lots of nuances are missed the first time, so a second visit is advisable. I liked it more the first time.

But I’ll grant it’s a very good movie. That is if you can make it past the first 20-25 minutes which are glacially slow. Snooze time.

Now let’s move onto the star, Aparizio. For most of the movie her character is as deadpan as Keanu Reeves. It requires little talent to deadpan. However, this is one of the subtleties non-Mexicans will miss. Domestics in Mexico are indeed deadpan more often than not.

This is especially true if they’re indigenous.

The only scene in Roma where Aparizio shines is the segment in the hospital where she has her baby. It’s a gripping scene, and she does a great job of acting. Kudos to her.

Here is why the movie, and Aparizio especially, are receiving so much praise and why she’s laughably been nominated for an Oscar. The movie pushes all the PC buttons for Hollywood types.

  1. Filmed in black and white.
  2. There are subtitles.
  3. The star is Mexican
  4. The star is indigenous and female.

These factors have sent America’s West and Northeast coasts into a swoon. I predict the movie will win the Best Picture Oscar and Aparitzio will win as Best Actress, all for the four reasons just stated.

Recall that the 2013 Best Picture winner was 12 Years a Slave, another movie dear to politically correct hearts. After winning that year, it came to light that a number of Academy members voted for 12 Years a Slave without actually having seen the movie. Incredible.

So Aparizio will take the Oscar home.

And in another year, she will be forgotten, back to teaching in Oaxaca, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Good teachers have value.

The Oscar has become as political as the Nobel Prize, a fact that has rendered them virtually meaningless. Aparizio’s winning as Best Actress will be up there with Barry Obama winning the Peace Prize and Bob Dylan the prize for Literature. Sad.

There’s much to ponder

I was thinking; If Leftists don’t believe in biological gender then why do they march for women’s rights?

I was thinking; If women do the same job for less money, why do companies hire men to do the same job for more money?

I was thinking; Since only 11 million people have ObamaCare, how will 24 million people die if it is repealed? Will an additional 13 million people be randomly shot?

I was thinking; We should stop calling them all “Entitlements.” Welfare, Food Stamps, WIC, ad nausea, are not Entitlements. They are taxpayer-funded handouts and shouldn’t be called Entitlements at all. But Social Security and Veterans Benefits are Entitlements because the people receiving them are entitled to them. They were earned and paid for by the recipients.

01515-thinking-cap-ideas-vectorI was thinking; If you rob a bank in a Sanctuary City, is it illegal, or is it just an Undocumented Withdrawal?

I was thinking; After the London “Lone Wolf” terrorist attack, government officials arrested at least eight other “Lone Wolves” who had conspired with the original “Lone Wolf” in planning the “Lone Wolf” attack.

Why do they tell us even though all involved are Mohammedans, you can be assured that the “Lone Wolf” attack has nothing at all to do with Islam, just like the other 1,000-plus “Lone Wolf” attacks by Mohammedans, are completely unassociated with Islam?

I was thinking; Why is each ISIS attack now a reaction to Trump policies, but all ISIS attacks during Obama’s term were due to Climate Change and a plea for jobs?

I was thinking; If Mohammedans want to run away from a Mohammedan country, does that mean they are Islamophobic?

I was thinking; If Democrats don’t want foreigners involved in our elections, why do they think it’s all right for illegals to vote?

I was thinking; Is the DNC is mad at Russia because it “thinks” they are trying to manipulate our elections, or because Russia is exposing that the DNC is manipulating our elections?

I was thinking; How did the Russians get Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC to steal the Primary from Bernie Sanders? How did Russia get Donna Brazile to leak debate questions to Hillary Clinton in advance of the debates?

I was thinking; Why is it that Democrats think Super Delegates are fine, but they have a problem with the Electoral College?

I was thinking; If Donald Trump deleted all of his emails, wiped his server with Bleachbit and destroyed all of his phones with a hammer, would the Mainstream Media suddenly lose all interest in the story and declare him innocent?

I was thinking; If Hillary’s speeches cost $250,000 an hour, how come no one shows up to her free speeches?

I was thinking; If you don’t want the FBI involved in elections, don’t nominate someone who’s being investigated by the FBI.

(Note: I did not write the above. I found it in the comment section of an online news website. It was left by someone who uses the moniker Brokemexifornia. But he says he did not write it either. Someone emailed it to him. So it’s anonymous.

(The only significant editing I did was to change Muslim to my preferred term, Mohammedan, and to change Liberal to Leftist. I use Mohammedan because it galls PC people, and I use Leftist instead of Liberal because it’s accurate.

(The sole bone I have to pick with the piece is the common claim that Social Security payments are simply the return of money paid into the account by the recipient during his working life. This is true for some people. Those who live a long time after retirement and/or retired early like me, often are getting handouts in their latter years, i.e. welfare.)

Bill & Barry said the same stuff

THIS VIDEO is a real hoot. Quite clever.

If you suffer from that thankfully noncontagious affliction widely known as TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome), you’ll likely toss yourself on the floor, start screaming and thrashing your legs and arms like toddlers.

You may mindlessly holler, Impeach! Impeach! Impeach! You might intersperse that with Nazi! Fascist! Racist! Resist! Dictatorship!

Severe cases, and they are numerous, will threaten violence.

But the sane among us will just laugh at the video … and at you too.
